When I was first diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma in 1999, a Toronto chapter didn’t
exist. There had been one in the past however the group had folded.
Back in April 2004, Henry Kitts, a patient with an acoustic neuroma, met with Rex Banks
(Director of Hearing Healthcare and Chief Audiologist) at the Canadian Hearing Society
on Spadina Avenue and discussed the need for a support group in the Toronto area.
Rex offered space at the CHS and Joanne Bennett and I were contacted as we had
both expressed an interest in forming a chapter.
We held our first meeting in May 2004.
Fundraising for ANAC was important and we organized two dinner/dance events with
silent auctions in 2006 and 2007. When I was a Bell Canada employee, I was
recognized for my volunteer work and Bell donated funds to ANAC on my behalf. When
I asked my financial advisor for a “door prize” for our first dance, it evolved into several
monetary donations from RBC Dominion Securities and they have become a repeated
sponsor for ANAC’s symposiums.
Joanne retired and moved away from Toronto and Kathryn Harrod has been assisting
me in leading the group since 2009.
We had an opportunity to meet and thank Henry at our Strategic Planning meeting held
in 2012, led by our previous president, Dr Carol-Anne Sullivan.
I want to thank everyone who has attended our meetings. The Toronto group continues
to provide strong support and generously shares their time, extensive research and
treatment experiences.
A special thanks to Rex as he continues to offer his expertise and support during our
meetings and to Kathryn for her ongoing support.
